Situated in the picturesque hills of Lexington, Kentucky, North Elkhorn Farm gets its name from the beautiful Elkhorn Creek that meanders through the property.
Family-owned and operated, we take pride in caring for, breeding, and raising our Katahdin sheep. Our sheep are grass-fed only (no additional grain), are never confined, have access to shelter, and plenty of pasture
where they graze from sun up to sundown. Our Katahdin ewes are bred once a year in the fall, with lambing occurring in the early Spring.
Visitors are always welcome at North Elkhorn Farm. Please give us a call and stop by for a visit.
Meet Gringa. Gringa loves her sheep, and you will often find her in the pasture playing with the babies. When not entertaining the babies, Gringa spends her days and nights protecting them from predators. Her sweet nature (unless you’re a coyote, of course) has made her a neighborhood and farm favorite.
Developed in Maine, Katahdin sheep are a cross between the St. Croix sheep from the Virgin Islands and various English breeds like the Suffolk. Medium-sized, the Katahdin breed’s coats come in different textures and colors. They are low maintenance, hardy, and adapt well to many climates. Popular traits include their quality as a meat sheep, excellent mothering traits (with an average of 2 lambs/gestation), and do not require shearing, saving time, and labor.
